P.E.Q. Response

My family has really played an important role in the person that I am today. I just recently saw a video in Biology that was discussing weather we are who we are because of our DNA or the way that we are raised. There is an argument that is going on between scientists about this certain subject and there is evidence to support both sides.
Although I am not a scientist I think that my DNA did play a part into making me the person that I am today. Yet the care and nurture that I received when I was a baby till now is also a very important part in the way that I have matured. I am one of the people who believe that both our DNA and nurture are very important parts of who we grow up to be.
There is a certain part of us that we cannot control, things that have already been set for us just by chance. We are taught a lot of things from our parents and others who took care of us in our youth and to this day. Everyone in my family is very close and we see each other every Sunday at my grandmothers’ house where we eat dinner together and catch up on the week.
I am the person that I am today partly because of my DNA but also because of the nurture that my family showed to me. If I was just thrown by the way side and totally forgotten about I am positive that I would not be the same person that I am today.

Squaw Valley

Over spring break I was lucky enough to be able to travel to Lake Tahoe and Snow board with my family. Ever since that I can remember we have gone to Tahoe and vacationed there during spring break, this year was no different. My dad just turned fifty this year and his brother and sister gave him reservations to stay at the village at Squaw Valley. It was so convenient just being able to wake up and walk to the lifts in the morning. The trip was a lot of fun and being able to spend some time with my family was also really nice, since in Hawaii we don’t have a lot of time with everything that is going on such as work, school, and athletics that we have to attend too.
I also saw some of my friends up in Tahoe and I was lucky enough to try out night snow boarding for the first time and I have to say I loved it! It think that it was just as good if not better than day snow boarding because the snow is just as good and there is basically no one on the mountain, so its like you have your own personal run. Although there aren’t as many runs open as in the day it is still a lot of fun.
We also got to go and see my cousins and aunty and uncles who live in San Francisco, the ones who gave my dad the condo to stay in. We don’t get to see them as much as we would like to because they live in San Francisco any chance that we can spend some time with them we take advantage of.
Spring break was a lot of fun and it went by really fast. I would go back in a heart beat if I could but like anything else I will have to work hard in school if I want to go again.

P.E.Q. Response

While still trying to answer the question who am I? I decided to look at the things that I liked to do. Ever since I can remember I always enjoyed playing sports. I started playing soccer around the age of eight and I still enjoy the sport to this day. I also used to play basketball, golf, and tennis. I have since had to make some decisions because there was no possible way to keep up all of these sports and my school work. Currently I just finished the soccer season for Punahou and am now trying out track for the first time.
I think that by playing these sports I am continually learning more and more about myself. Soccer is a team sport and that is something that I really enjoy, being apart of a team is something like no other. This year especially we as a team bonded and worked together so well we were able to win the J.V. title for our Punahou. Being apart of a team teaches me many important lessons that help me to succeed in my life. Teamwork and compromise are only a few values that are really exemplified in soccer and other team sports.
Track is a sport that I am trying for the first time this year. Just on the first day of practice it has taught me that trying something new, something that I have always had a hard time with, can turn out pretty good. Track so far has been a surprise and in a good way, I thought that it would be kind of boring but it has turned out to be a lot of fun and very exciting. Track is an individual sport and that aspect is something that I have had to make and adjustment too. I have learned a lot about how to show dedication and because of that I have been able to work hard and push myself to the limits.
Sports had taught me a lot about how to handle different situations in my life. The lessons that I learned in sports have carried over into my academics and everyday life and have really helped me to mature into the person that I am today.

Ghost Story

My ghost story is about Morgan's corner and the superstition behind the whole area. I had heard this story from my seventh grade teacher Mr.Koshiba, as a class we had a free period and it was Halloween so we decided it would be fun to listen to ghost stories. So Mr. Koshiba had a book that was filled with Hawaiian scary stories and he started to tell us some pretty freaky stories. There were so many different ones that he told us but the one that really stuck to me and gave me goose bumps was the one of Morgan's corner.
This story takes place in the area of the Pali called Morgan's corner. Supposedly a couple was driving home over the Pali and stopped at Morgan's corner and for a while because the rain was coming down hard. After they waited around for a while for the rain to let up, they decided it was getting late and it was time to head home. The man tried to start the car but the engine made a puttering noise and refused to start. He decided to go to the town near by and look for some help, he told the woman to stay in the car and wait for him because he would be back soon. So he left and she did as he told her to and stayed in the car waiting for him. She waited up for a while and she then decided to just go to sleep.
She woke up in the middle of the night to rain falling on the roof of her car and the branches scratching the top of the car, but she paid no attention to it and dozed back to sleep. In the morning a police officer went to her and woke her up. He then took to his car and she saw that there were a lot of policemen in the area. The one officer told her not to look back but she got curious and did, she was horrified! What she thought was rain was actually the blood of the man and the branches scratching was his toenails scrapping the top of the roof. He had been hung and the wind was blowing him back and forth.
This is just one of the many stories that Morgan's corner has, but in my opinion one of the scarier ones that still freaks me out.

Magical Realism

With my family there is never a dull moment, there is always something going on. Between the four of us in the family we are always experiencing one thing or another, weather it be playing sports, going on a trip, or getting a crazy present that is bound to cause something to go wrong. We always find a way to make our lives and stories just all that much better. The story is of when we did get that crazy present one year for my brothers and my Christmas present, a bottle of Gatorade, or so I thought.
This bottle looked to be Gatorade but it really wasn’t, it was a magical potion that when drunk would allow you to make a wish. The first time that I looked at the bottle I thought that it had said Gatorade but really it had said Dreamade. At first I didn’t believe my dad and thought he’s just making up stories like he always does until I hear my mom say “This was your fathers idea”. That is exactly when I knew that it was for real and it hit me I was in shock. I had never known that there was a kind of magical drink that could make your wildest dreams come true. It seamed totally unreal and I really couldn’t believe it until I myself tried it. It tasted like a cold Gatorade even though it hadn’t been in the refrigerator, I waited a moment and then something magical happened.
A piece of paper and a pen appeared out of thin air and landed in my hands. On the paper there were directions of what I was to do in order to get my wish, it said “Take the pen and please legibly write anything that you desire on the piece of paper. After doing so please put the paper down and set back, because it will ignite”. So I thought to myself well this can’t get much weirder. So I took the paper wrote down A.T.V. asking for an All Terrain Vehicle, then put the paper down outside and stepped back. And just like the instructions said, the piece of paper burst into flames and
Suddenly we hear a bang out side in my garage and low and behold a new blue A.T.V. was sitting in my garage with the key in and the motor running ready to be driven. I hopped on and took it for a ride around my house and the neighborhood just amazed that it had all actually happened. I then took it up to Roosevelt and was ridding it in the back hills really just having fun. I decided then to take it down a narrow and steep hill to see just how fast I could go, to get my adrenalin pumping.
I hit the gas and took of! Flying down the hill at about 50 M.P.H.! But then something went wrong and the handle bars started to shake from side to side, I was losing control of the A.T.V. and couldn’t stop! Just then I hit a bump knocking the Dreamade that I had been carrying in my pocket to the ground spilling it all. As soon as I looked back I lost all concentration and that’s when I lost total control over my A.T.V and flipped in the air! I was spinning in the air holding on to my A.T.V. for dear life! Then suddenly I hit ground! I had fallen out of my bed and it had all been an amazing dream.

Personal Essential Question Response

As I had said before in my previous response, I think that by breaking my life down into the roles that I play and the things that I have to do I will be able to better understand who I am. The role that I play as a friend is something that I continually work on and look at. In order to have good friends I myself must be one, by having this state of mind I hope to continue to become a better and better friend to my peers. I myself am a very social able person and I really enjoy the company of others rather than being by myself and solitary.
My close friends have come to know me as someone who really also likes to have a good time. I enjoy like some of my other friends being the life of the party, the person who really just goes a little crazy and makes everything just that much more fun. My friend Bryan who has had to move to Japan had a going away party and it was a lot of fun! Bryan, Cory, and I all really close and kind of stupid made the most of our last night together. We did everything that we could to make my friend Bryan's last night the most memorable one of all.
I am also the kind of friend that will try his hardest to keep in touch no matter how hard it may be. So with my friend Bryan going to Japan this made it a little more difficult for me and him to keep in touch with each other. So we found a way to talk over the internet for little or no money at all. This way we could call each other and not have to worry about the cost of talking. I can't wait until he comes back during spring break and we will finally be able to have some real fun, and reunite our entire close group of friends. I can only imagine how much fun we are going to have with each other since we haven’t all see each other for months.
My friends are very important to me and I hate losing a close friend, and will not lose one with out putting up a fight. This just goes to show that I am someone who really will fight hard for someone or something that I believe in.
